The Essential Guide to Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene with Braces

Embarking on a journey toward a straighter, more confident smile is an exciting step, but it takes work to see ideal results. If you’re currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, you’re likely aware of the adjustments needed in your daily routine. One aspect that cannot be emphasized enough is the importance of maintaining oral hygiene throughout your orthodontic treatment. Here are a few helpful oral hygiene tips for those wearing braces:

1. Practice Proper Brushing Technique

Regular brushing is essential to keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Braces create additional surfaces and crevices for food particles and plaque to accumulate, making it crucial to refine your brushing techniques. Invest in a high-quality soft-bristled toothbrush and spend at least two minutes thoroughly cleaning each tooth and bracket. Angling the brush towards the top and bottom of your brackets and using small, circular motions will help reach those challenging spots and ensure your brush is getting behind the wire. Make sure to angle the brush towards your gum line and brush that hard-to-reach area as well. You should feel the bristles of your toothbrush gently massaging the gum pockets around your teeth.

For young children or individuals with reduced manual dexterity, a power toothbrush (Sonicare or Oral B) can be very helpful. These toothbrushes will vibrate or spin to help remove plaque as long as the brush is held at the proper angle and towards the appropriate areas to be cleaned. Typically, power toothbrushes also have a built-in timer to ensure you or your child are brushing for an adequate amount of time.

2. Floss Regularly and Thoroughly

Flossing becomes more intricate with braces, but it’s equally vital to maintain good oral hygiene. Traditional dental floss or specialized orthodontic floss threaders can help navigate the wires and brackets. Aim to floss at least once a day, preferably before brushing, to remove plaque and debris from between your teeth, preventing potential decay or other issues like gum disease. Our favorite tools for making flossing with braces are Platypus flossers and the Plackers Orthopick.

3. Choose the Right Tools

Maintaining good oral hygiene with braces doesn’t just stop at brushing and flossing. Consider adding interdental brushes, proxy brushes, or a water flosser to your oral care arsenal. These tools can be particularly effective in reaching areas that traditional brushing and flossing might miss, ensuring a comprehensive clean for your teeth and braces.

4. Schedule Regular Check-ups

It’s essential to maintain a regular appointment schedule with your orthodontist, but don’t forget about your regular dental check-ups. You should continue to see your dentist for routine examinations and professional cleanings at least every six months throughout your orthodontic treatment to ensure your teeth remain healthy. During a dental check-up, a dental hygienist will also be able to clean around your braces properly to ensure any remaining bacteria is removed.

5. Use Fluoridated Toothpaste and Mouthwash

Fluoride is a mineral that naturally occurs in many foods and waters. Fluoride helps keep your teeth healthy by reducing the risk of cavities and strengthening your enamel. We highly recommend using fluoride toothpaste and rinsing with fluoride mouth rinse before going to sleep each night, especially during your orthodontic treatment.

6. Consider Diet Changes

Adopting a braces-friendly diet is an often-overlooked aspect of oral hygiene. Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods that can damage brackets and wires. Opt for soft foods and maintain a well-balanced diet to support overall oral health. Decreasing the amount of sugary foods and drinks that you intake will also help prevent things like decalcification (white scars) and cavities.

7. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is not only beneficial for your overall health but is also a necessary part of a good oral hygiene routine. Water helps flush out bacteria and food particles and keeps the teeth healthy by reducing the risk of plaque buildup and decay.
